Theory of Approach on Case Study
According to Herzberg’s theory, an employee motivation is realized with challenging but enjoyable work where efforts and achievement are recognized and rewarded. According to Herzberg, there are two main factors that influence employee’s motivation. On one hand, there are intrinsic factors that emphasize on following the desire to grow psychologically. On the other hand, there are extrinsic factors that assert work dissatisfactions stems from desires to avoid unpleasant experiences.
Looking at Initech work environment, there are various dissatisfaction aspects that can be deduced from the case. In the case study, there is a lack of employee motivation whereby the employees are required to abide by top management decisions without any questioning. Thus, it can be argued that Initech employees are always in constant fear and intimidation by the top management signaling presence of a hostile work environment. According to Herzberg model, the workplace should be designed in a manner that makes the employees comfortable through designing and implementation of a viable communication channels. Moreover, according to Peter there seems to be an absence of proper remuneration where employees are not compensated for the extra hard work they put in the company. To keeps Initech workforce motivated, proper remuneration and communication as advocated by Herzberg model should be followed.
Looking at The Coffee Bean case, the management has gone an extra mile in ensuring employee job satisfaction and motivation through incorporating fun in the workplace. However, the motivation adopted by the management only seems to target the customers rather than the employees. According to Herzberg model, workplaces should enable employees achieve some level of psychological development. The alteration of the work environment reflects one of the factors encouraged by Herzberg model, where employees are provided with the opportunity to experience psychological growth development and interact more with the customers. Therefore, between the two firms Initech and The Coffee Bean, working at the Coffee Bean would be the ultimate choice of any employee.
